Biography:

I am a voice teacher of Carnatic Music, based in Madison, WI.  I teach the South Indian classical music system.  I have taught voice lessons for over 12 years, to students ranging from about 3 years old to adults.

I started my vocal training at the age of five with Shri. Kannan in Coimbatore, India.  For the past several years now, I have had advanced training under the expert guidance of Acharya Ratnakara Shri. Chitravina N. Narasimhan.  I am forever grateful to the knowledge I received from my gurus and do my best to impart this wealth of knowledge to my students.

I am passionate about teaching.  I structure my lessons to include all aspects of music like theory, ear training, sight reading, notation writing, practicing techniques, and rhythm exercises.  I personally feel that this method of training ensures that students are well-rounded.

I enjoy practicing music and love the meditative effect it has on me.  I also perform locally at temple events and with the Swaralayam group based in my hometown.  I am a mom of two girls and in my spare time, love traveling and hiking with my family.

About My Gurus:

Shri. Kannan

The eldest of Kovai Kannan Brothers fame, Shri. Kannan was a very passionate musician and devoted teacher, who instilled the importance of good work ethics in his students.  He would start teaching his lessons at 5:30 am very diligently, rain or shine.  He taught students how to memorize pieces, sing without a book and sing soulfully.  He was very patient, encouraging and always had a kind word for his students.   Even though he passed away many years ago, I still think of him fondly and am grateful for all that he taught me.

Shri. Chitravina N. Narasimhan

Son of legendary musician, Gotuvadyam Narayana Iyengar, Shri. Chitravina Narasimhan is one of the greatest revolutionary thinkers of Carnatic music.  His unique ideals, vision and methods have changed Carnatic music pedagogy, and have contributed significantly towards lowering the average age of performing musicians.  A brilliant musician and performer himself, Shri. Narasimhan has constantly worked on amassing a huge wealth of knowledge, both practical and theoretical, by learning from and interacting with other great musicians of his timesHe has won many awards and titles such as Gotuvadya Kalanidhi, Gotuvadya Praveena, Hanumad Gana Shiromani, Acharya Ratnakara (from Aradhana Committee, Cleveland, USA) and Acharya Pitamaha (San Diego, USA).

Shri. Narasimhan is a teacher par excellence, has composed several ragam-tanam-pallavis in intricate talas and evolved melodic-rhythmic techniques that simplify very complex ideas to students, in a very easy manner.  He has generously shared the wealth of information he has and strives to impart passion, discipline and work ethics to every student of his.  I am so grateful for having had the opportunity to learn from such a teacher.
